I Have Worn the Honors of Honor...

Well, the blog is finally in my hands (as opposed to my dad's or my uncle's...although they may have fooled you!)

After I was released from Fontaine on Wednesday, May 7 (exactly 4 weeks from the day I was admitted), I moved into my new home for the next 10 days - an accessible room at the Hilton Garden Inn in Charlottesville. I got to rest and detox from the whole hospital/quasi-hospital experience and start doing more things for myself. The hotel stay led up to the big event - graduation from UVA. The weekend began with a lovely cocktail party in Pavilion I on the Lawn with my amazing group of friends and our parents on Friday night (May 16), followed by a barbeque hosted by the Hardie family at a gorgeous venue in the mountains on Saturday. Graduation was Sunday, starting with the processional down the Lawn at 10 am. My friend Laura pushed me to help me through the wet grass because, of course, it started sprinkling at about 9:45. All 8 of my friends and I navigated our way down the ramps in the light rain with only a few minor mishaps. The commencement ceremony ended around noon and the family and I moved to the English department reception to relax for about an hour before the English diploma ceremony began. Unfortunately, thanks to the inclement weather our ceremony was relocated to John Paul Jones Arena - a less picturesque version of the intended location, the Lawn. Nevertheless, the ceremony went smoothly and we even got to meet John Grisham. The day ended with a graduation party at 44 University Circle thrown by my friends and I and our families.

So now, I'm a college graduate doing what every college graduate dreams of - living at home. I came home to Powhatan on Monday, May 19 to a very different house than the one I last remembered visiting. There is a series of ramps leading up to the front porch so i can get in the house, and a newly-painted bedroom and bathroom equipped with some necessary adjustments to accommodate my new lifestyle. While there are some remodeling projects that remain unfinished, being home is a huge step forward from living in a hospital. I can do most things for myself now and have become much more independent even in the last couple weeks. It's definitely not easy though - the hospital environment and the rehab environment are bubbles that keep the real world essentially shut out so you can recover. Once you're out of the bubble, the real world comes at you fast (funny - that's what they tell people when they graduate from college). So I'm dealing with the double shock of being finished with college (eek!) and re-integrating into a society that, let's face it, is not always "wheelchair accessible," in more ways than one. It gets better every day, though, and I think the more quickly I can get back to feeling like my old self again, the easier it will be.

What's next? Learning to drive and getting into a better wheelchair that gives me more mobility, for starters. Then hopefully another rehab center to do some more advanced, higher-level therapy. The plans aren't made yet, so I'll be sure to keep everyone updated every step of the way.

Thanks so much to everyone who sent cards, letters, gifts, flowers, and other tokens of care and sympathy. Knowing how many people there are out there who care about me and want to see me succeed has meant so much to my recovery.

Braces Off Again!!

Braces are never fun. I remember Ashley counting down the days to get her braces taken off her teeth...seems like ages ago. Last Friday Dr. Elias, her surgeon, met with her and gave her the green light to take off the back and neck braces that have so limited her movement the past month. Happy day again!!! She's mending so well they were able to come off a couple of weeks early. Wednesday she checks out of rehab and into the Hilton Garden Inn for the ten days remaining until graduation, which now should be a much cooler event for her not encased in the plastic "turtle shell".

Out and About

Last Saturday night, not quite three weeks since her back surgery, Ashley was strong enough to attend the spring performance of UVA's Rhapsody Dance Ensemble. She's been a member since her first year at UVA, joining others who wanted to continue dancing while attending college. Many lasting friendships were forged at Rhapsody and it was great to see her celebrate with her pals. It was her first night outside a hospital since the end of March (we think - unless she's been sneaking off to the Corner without telling us). We were all pleased to see she's been paying attention during her PT sessions and moved through the labyrinths at Old Cabell Hall easily...easily enough to join her fellow fourth-years onstage for the final curtain and some well-deserved appreciation from her fellow dancers and the audience.

"Looks like I gotta go to rehab..."

Ash checked in to rehab on Wednesday afternoon and has settled in to a daily routine of learning new ways to get familiar chores done. Her pain is under control for the most part, and she's focused on getting strong enough to attend graduation. Nice rehab hospital, but no wireless...bummer. I was going to give her the keys to this blog!
Here's the address:

UVA/HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital
515 Ray C. Hunt Drive
Charlottesville, VA 22903

Visitors from 3-8 pm, but call her iPhone first to see what her schedule is.

Pain Management

Ashley is doing well, but dealing with a lot of pain (safe to say she was a lot happier before they took her IV away). This past weekend was long and mostly sleepless, but a steady stream of wellwishers, waiters and short-order cooks kept her mind off her discomfort. This morning the chronic pain team took over her meds, and think they have a mix that might work better for her. The pain is coming from the area of her surgery, so it is not unexpected, but doesn't make it any easier for her to deal with. Once the pain team gets it right, she can move to the next phase, which is rehab for two weeks, locally. We're hoping this will happen Wednesday. Then on to graduation day!!!
Thanks to all for the flowers, gifts, calls, emails, visits, companionship...the show of support this past week has been unbelievable, and much appreciated by Ash as well as her family.

Feeling a little better

Ashley's post-op discomfort is better today. She's still resting.
The team is working on getting the address book from her old cellphone into her new iPhone.

Resting

Ashley has been tranferred to the post-op ICU for the night. She's feeling the effects of the surgery and is keeping a low profile for the time being.

Success

Ashley's surgery to stabilize her spine was successful. She's on her way to the recovery room.

Headed for surgery

Ashley is being prepped for surgery to stabilize her spine. The chief neurosurgeon is optimistic, considers the procedure routine.

The surgery is scheduled for 7:30 and should last four hours.

Out of ICU

Ashley sat through a long, hot MRI this afternoon and has been moved to a private room.
She's in great spirits.

Why this is here

Ashley was thrown from a horse on March 29 and suffered significant back injury. She is being treated at the University of Virginia medical center.
